What is Your Favourite Thing/Item to Make?

Linen bread bags are my 'bread and butter.' Hah! They took off in a way I hadn't anticipated. I love making them for a number of bakeries and shops both in and outside of the city. I also love tweaking products we use every day to improve their function and that is how I created my most recent product: Face the Day Facecloths (a new cloth for a new day!). Did you know that using a fresh face cloth every day can improve your skin? These facecloths are two-sided. One side is ivory cotton flannel (wash your face in the morning with this side). The other side is black cotton flannel (wash your face in the evening with the side to minimize stains from dirt and makeup that appear on the cloth). Each cloth is labelled with the day of the week and has a handy loop for hanging.

Favourite Holiday/Winter Tradition:

Celebrating Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, with neighbours in the backyard. We build a fire in the fire pit, play games with the kids, roast marshmallows, eat chili and drink lovely cocktails! Adding the tradition of making your own lantern to bring is something I'll try this year!

Ida's Cookies

Some of My Favourite Things Include:

Baking and spending time with my kids.

How Did You Get Started?:

If you’ve tried our cookies, then you know the love and passion that goes into each one. The love behind our product starts with Ida herself. Through worldwide travels, hard work, and heartache, Ida’s Cookies has emerged.

Ida is a George Brown College graduate in Pastry Chef training. She is also a self-taught Chinese fusion dessert chef. After a brief stay in Hong Kong, she moved back to Canada and settled in Toronto. It was here that she was encouraged by her mentor Donald Tse to open a chain of Chinese dessert cafes. Through a lot of ups and downs, and two kids later, Ida’s Cookies was born in November of 2018.

Ida is not merely an entrepreneur, but a mother, and has always balanced motherhood and business ownership. With her six-year-old son Lucas in tow, and her 2-year-old daughter Kaylee by her side, she manages Ida’s Cookies as a single mother.

An entrepreneur at heart, Ida and her two partners hustles Ida’s Cookies with love and determination. In her own words, “the good life is always ahead of us - when life hands you lemons, make lemon shortbread cookies!”

Just my plain old birth given name.

Some of My Favourite Things Include:

To put it simply, I really enjoy drawing! It's always been one of my most favourite things to do, alongside reading, spending time on hikes in the woods, listening to my favourite albums on repeat, playing video games and cuddling with my puppy.

How Did You Get Started?:

The genuine epiphany to get started occurred in my early years spent at the Ontario College of Art and Design, while collaborating with fellow artist friends as well as teaching watercolour and pottery classes at a small art studio outside of school. During that time, I realized that I should start shedding my creative insecurities, stop being an observer and aim to become a part of the art and design industry. Now I've been working professionally as a freelance illustrator as well as artist for four years and hope to never stop!

What is Your Favourite Thing/Item to Make?

I enjoy everything I work on and create, especially the beginning stages, coming with ideas and sketching them out. However, most recently I've been getting back into my roots of sewing and have been drawing textile patterns to make into decorative pillows. So that has been a whole new and exciting challenge!

Favourite Holiday/Winter Tradition:

Mainly being cozy with a warm mug of tea and snowshoeing, which I started doing last winter.

Gertzie Girl Designs

Story Behind the Name:

In 2008 I married the love of my life and while I adored him (and still do!), it took me over a year before I decided to take his last name. I thought it would be an easier decision but apparently I was a little fonder of my maiden name than I realized! When I started my handmade business, adding an ‘ie’ to my new last name – Gertz – helped me adjust to a single syllable name and allowed me to pay a small homage to my former self.

Some of My Favourite Things Include:

My favourite things tend to be my happy things (often reflected in my work) and these include music, concerts, singing, dancing, roadtrips, Vancouver Island, the TV shows Friends and Schitt’s Creek, my husband and mini goldendoodle, my circle of friends, chocolate, super crispy bacon, swimming, sunsets, mountain air, and sunshine!

How Did You Get Started?:

Initially I wanted to find a specific pendant for a friend who had suffered a loss. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I figured out a way to make my own. Thankfully my friend loved her new keepsake and that same year I decided to make a few other pendants to give to family as Christmas gifts. However when I showed some friends what I’d been up to, they started buying the pendants from me and though a slow start, this essentially became the gentle push behind me starting my own little handmade business.

What is Your Favourite Thing/Item to Make?

My Tree of Life glass pendant. I love that it’s a photograph I took and that it has such a meaningful story behind it. It resonates with so many people and remains one of my best sellers.

Stainsby Studios

Story Behind the Name:

I wanted to make it easy to connect my name and the stamp on the bottom of my ceramics with my business. And ta da! Stainsby Studios.

Some of My Favourite Things Include:

I absolutely love to eat well and spend time with the people I love. It's even better if I can combine these two things and feed everyone too! I also love learning new things and ceramics is a never-ending learning process from making to decorating to firing. One of my absolutely favourite things to do is open a kiln after a glaze firing. It's so thrilling! Even though ceramics is my current obsession, I love to do all kinds of crafts and I've tried almost everything. I'm a voracious reader and I read two to three books a week.

How Did You Get Started?:

I absolutely love making ceramics. When we started having to keep my pottery in boxes, I realized it was time to seriously consider starting a business. I have just figured it out as I go along. I know I'll make mistakes but, as one of my kids says, you miss every shot you don't take!

Hunnabees Honey & Co.

Some of My Favourite Things Include:

We love hiking the valley with our husky Maya, working in the garden, woodworking, birdwatching, hanging in the bee yard & the smell of strong, dark coffee in the morning.

How Did You Get Started?:

We are 3rd generation beekeepers who started on Scugog Island, where Daves Grandfather originally kept bees. His mother now owns the property, and when they located a swarm on the island in 2012, they figured it was “meant to bee” and got back into beekeeping. We purchased the Millbrook farm in 2016 and began work on our 5000 sq ft honey house & educational facility.

I love to travel when time permits, explore local coffee shops, local boutiques, new fun places around Toronto. FOOD! This may be obvious looking at my products :) Food is definitely one of my favourite things because it makes you happy and brings people together.

How Did You Get Started?:

I am a surface designer and I create patterns to be used on various products. I wanted to create a fun, unique line of products that would make people smile. Who doesn't love food? All my prints are designed by myself and I look forward to expanding my collection with more prints, more food and different products.

What is Your Favourite Thing/Item to Make?

Ultimately, I just have a lot of fun creating the patterns in general. Creating seamless patterns is somehow therapeutic for me. I enjoy designing my notepads the most because I live on notepads and taking notes! I love to see my patterns come to life on a product.
